Storytelling with Musical Notes
With a show of hands, how many of us have the courage to drop all things to pursue our passion? I personally fear to do so for future’s uncertainty, but for Sheng Li, it is more fearful not to pursue his passion.
Sheng Li is a musician from Singapore and the founder of GuitarStreet. He is passionate about telling stories with music and specializes in live acoustic music. He also has a rich experience in performing on special occasions with a repertoire of English and Chinese pop songs.
Busking to Success
Driven by his passion to bring music to more people, Sheng Li decided to audition for a busking license in 2017. Through busking, he soon discovered his love for performing and has since continued to perform regularly in weddings and events. He took a step further in his music by helping others discover the joy of learning music through his YouTube channel and online guitar course.

Please share the most memorable challenge when you first started.
After passing my busking audition, I was so excited to get started! But when I received my busking license, I remember sitting on it for a good 4-5 months before I finally went out to play for the first time… I was really scared and nervous!
How did you overcome it?
I woke up one day, packed my things, and just went out to play. I didn’t let my brain process the moment for any longer – otherwise, I knew I wouldn’t do it. Now, I see busking as the “litmus test” for the quality of my music. When I see people enjoying and moving to the tunes of my music, I feel rewarded.
What motivated you to create a website?
I wanted a place that I can host my songs and tutorial videos. Most importantly, I also wanted a website to act as my “name card” when people are interested to engage me for live music.

How digital innovation helps your business?
For example: Receive more quality inquiries, increase in sales, increase of awareness, as compared to traditional methods (e.g. flyer/ brochure distribution)
It helps me to get more exposure and attract more customers.
What are the 4 things that you wish someone told you earlier when starting your business?
- Every endeavor comes with its struggles. The question to ask is then, what problems do you want to solve, and what are you passionate about? Map what you want to do to what society actually wants, to make sure you are giving value to others.
- Care a lot for your customers, you will see them showing the same care for you right back, if not more.
- Find the thing that you love to do, that feels like play to you. As you gradually get better, you become more and more energized, pushing you to grow and become even better.
- Ideas are cheap, execution is everything.

For better or for worse, COVID-19 and the circuit breaker have brought about several paradigm shifts. Many buskers and musicians have sought online platforms to continue performing.
