Recently, we interviewed the founder of Music Delight School who shared his startup story, how he turned his passion into a thriving business, and how to build a team with the same passion for music teaching like he did.
The birth of Music Delight School.
I grew up learning music in a traditional music school. The teachers were strict and hardly had their jokes to entertain the innocent students, especially the very beginner.
In addition, the music we played was mostly “boring”.
I love music. Whatever age my students are, I care about their music growing and I love seeing them go home with a happy face and could tell their friends and family how fun it is during the class.
So, we founded Music Delight, because we believe that music is fundamentally fun, and learning should be a Delight.
We use the interests of our students to choose songs that will inspire them to take the initiative to learn, also giving them the motivation to practice.
Besides, our teachers are groomed with a passion to enrich students taken under their wing.
Finally, we provide opportunities for our students to shine through music performances, examinations & competitions!
Teacher recruitment is challenging.
At the beginning of our story, there were many challenges, from building up the school to developing a fully integrated system revolving Point of Sales, Inventory & Customer Relationship Management, and etc.
All those challenges can be solved in a short period of time.
Day after day, years after years, our music school is being recognized by the neighborhood, they can see we use love and passion to teach every student we had.
After we get more students, more than me and my partner can handle. In order not to disappoint the students, we decided to recruit more teachers to join our team.
We insist on our mission and passion, so we must find like-minded passionate teachers who would teach with the same heart that we did and it is another challenge to begin.
Overcome the challenge.
We held extensive interviews, got the teachers to perform for us, followed up with periodic training to make sure our teachers are up-to-date.
Also, we reviewed students on their performance standards to ensure that progress was made at a steady rate.
Each problem faced with a student was promptly addressed and discussed between teachers to find a solution to help both teachers and students.
We’re extremely happy with our current team of teachers and are very sure they will do their very best for each student.

Website and online store is a must.
In today’s digital era, a website and online store are most important to a business.
We knew from the get-go that we needed a website and e-store to provide information for our customers and an avenue to purchase their instrument necessities without having to come to the school personally.
Though we are just one school in the heart of Pasir Ris, our teachers travel around Singapore to teach in Government Schools (Primary, Secondary & Tertiary Institutions).
Having a website allows teachers from these schools to know of our presence and the good work that our teachers do in their schools.
Digital transformation helps increase business revenue.
In this digital transformation journey, we have received inquiries through our website, regular phone calls, and Whatsapp messages leading to student sign-ups.
For traditional marketing, most people just look at a flyer or brochure once and throw it away, which is a waste of money and paper and we can barely see the ROI.

Advice to those who are wandering their decision.
Find your passion and do your best at your startup. Plan your fundamentals well and aim to grow. A very wise teacher of mine once shared that in everything that we do, we should always ask “How does X improve the quality of my life?”.
When it comes to music teaching, it is something I personally enjoy and watching students grow and develop into musicians is extremely rewarding.
Each day I teach, I’m thankful and honestly if you enjoy what you do, you never work a day in your life.
